Sophomore Madison Rackett went 7-8 at the plate and picked up the win in the circle in both games as Middlesex College Softball swept Bergen CC in a season opening road doubleheader.
The Colts won Game 1, 13-0 and took Game 2, 15-6, to give new Head Coach Matt Mehalick his first two collegiate wins.
In Game 1, Middlesex scored four in the first and two in the second to jump out to a quick 6-0 lead. They added two more in the fourth and five in the fifth to end the game via mercy rule.
Rackett went 4-4 in the game with three runs and four RBIs. She belted a home run, laced two doubles and stole a base.
Mackenzie Marsh (Sophomore/Middlesex, NJ) went 3-4 with a home run, four runs and four RBIs. Carla Seyfarth (Sophomore/Monmouth Junction, NJ) delivered two RBIs.
Rackett went the distance, allowing just one hit over five shutout innings while striking out eight.
In Game 2, Middlesex opened a 3-0 lead, but a six-run bottom of the second by Bergen gave Middlesex their first deficit of the year. Rackett came on to quell the rally and pitched three shutout innings after that as the Middlesex offense boosted the Colts to another mercy rule victory.
Marsh and Rackett again were the hitting stars for Middlesex. Marsh went 3-4 with two home runs, three runs and six RBIs. Rackett went 3-4 with a double, run and RBI.
The Colts took advantage of 16 Bergen walks with Seyfarth drawing four of them on her own.
Seyfarth, Gianna Rios (Freshman/Woodbridge, NJ) and Leah Kripaitis (Sophomore/Woodbeidge, NJ) scored two runs each.
Ava Austin (Freshman/Edison, NJ) was the Colts starting pitcher and was relieved by Rackett, who picked up her second win of the day.
Middlesex returns to action on Saturday when they host Brookdale CC for their first home games of the season. First pitch of Game 1 is scheduled for 12:00PM.
